In Defense of the 770 at Matt Croydon::Postneo 2.0
Nancy Gohring was able to get her hands on a Nokia 770 prototype the other day at a press event in Helsinki. She posted a review on Mobile Pipeline and cross posted a shorter review on Wi-Fi Network News. Every postitive thing she said about the device hinted at the fact that she hated it because it was dog slow. One must remember that the processor behind the 770 is a 220MHz ARM, and that a 220MHz arm just isn’t a 2GHz Pentium 4. Having said that, I’m pretty sure that the final device will be a bit zippier than the one she played with. I’m also pretty sure that the boot time will be resolved on the final device and will be quick enough.

Nokia 770 Internet Tablet at 2:48AM [The B-Sides]
Finally a new gadget for me to crave and dream of. Its been such a dry period with gadgets lately with the same crap over and over. Nothing has been grabbing my attention, the Palm LifeDrive caught my attention for a full 5 minutes, but then I found out it ran on the ancient Palm OS 5 (where is 6?!?!) and that it would actually be less responsive then my current 3 year old Tungsten | T. Then suddenly out of the blue, the Nokia 770 tablet came along. From all the companies on this planet, Nokia was the last one I would have imagined would come up with a device like this. This is what the Sony Clie was supposed to be and what Apple should have introduced, a pda like device that allows you to surf the web.

I found at Gizmondo that the Nokia 770 is at CTIA. The picture makes it look like it is damaged. The reviewer also said that the 770 interface has a learning curve. He loved the screen. But he said he liked the OQO more. If I could afford the OQO I would probably have it right now but since I am poor I will probably go for the 770. If the OQO is ever the same price as the 770 it would be no contest. But what I like about the 770 is the price. I don't feel so bad if I lose the device or it gets broken. Now if the OQO gets damaged I would be so upset. It would cost so much to fix it.

A cool device for the casual user
Having owned many Nokia phones through the years I was pretty happy when Nokia announced the 770 Internet Tablet. I thought its about time Nokia is getting into the converged device field, but wait this device does not have a phone? Thats right no phone! I found that a little strange since the Nokia brand is synonymous with cellular phones. Well that is ok I can always pair it with my cell phone via Bluetooth to surf the internet or sync with my laptop. Wrong again! Sure I can pair the unit with my phone to browse the internet but this device lacks basic PIM functionality. There is no phonebook, calendar, or to do list. In essence it is not a PDA at all. In order to really appreciate what the 770 is you have to look at it for what it does and does well!

Ari Jaaksi's Blog: Let's be skeptical!
When we announced the 770 last May, many people were skeptical. I bet many people still are ;-) However, many others --not just us -- have been thinking about something similar: How to utilize rich internet from a device simpler, lighter, and cheaper than a PC. Let's take a few examples:

I bought a Nokia 770 today. It’s pretty cool, but I’m still getting used to the handwriting recogniton. It’s not easy for me, I have horrible handwriting. Read on for the skinny. You probably already know what the 770 is already. If not, start here. I’ll try to keep this pretty short.

Jeff Waugh beat me to the punch on a blog about the new firmware for the Nokia 770. I have to agree with him: The Nokia 770 is ready for the enterprise. And for the home. I installed the 2006 software update last night for the first time. While I have been coordinating with the Nokia and OpenedHand developers for a while, actually using the new software was a surprisingly pleasant experience. That’s an understatement. The software absolutely rocks.

Donovan’s Brain » My Nokia 770 Internet Tablet
Tired of toting my laptop around, I was determined to find an alternate solution to my needs, which were simple; check email and check in on Basecamp, my project management site, when I’m out and about. I was considering some kind of cell phone with web access but then I saw a post on the IMAGINIF weblog talking about the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet. When I saw Basecamp on the screen, I immediately wanted one and then ordered one an hour later.

Nokia, the Finnish phone folks, have revealed a not-a-phone device: the Nokia 770. It’s a great looking, instant on, wi-fi enabled tablet device slated for a Q3 2005 launch. And get this: it runs on Debian, GNOME and GStreamer! A blurb from mobileburn: Thanks to the 770’s massive 4.13″ diagonal, 800×480 pixel display, browsing and email should be quite comfortable. In addition to the Opera web browser and the built-in email client, the initial Q3 2005 release of the 770 will also ship with a RSS news reader, an Internet radio, various media players, a PDF viewer, and Flash v6 compatibility. A user installable software upgrade that is expected in Q1 of 2006 will introduce Voice Over IP (VOIP) and Instant Messaging to the mix.
