Evince has by default two backends: One for PDF files, that uses libpoppler and the other one for PS files, using ghostscript. When the first package was released, i was not able to test the PS backend, and finally when i tested, it was not working at all.

I was able to install the Scratchbox cross-compilation toolkit and the Maemo SDK without too much trouble, following the steps in the tutorial; when I went astray, reading the developer mailing list archives helped me get back on track quickly. My last try did not manage to get a proper look and feel in the Maemo environment. But this time I copied the files from /usr/share/themes from my Nokia 770 to the scratchbox environment on my computer (just click here if you are wondering what the hell is a scratchbox), and added this to .gtkrc-2.0 to my home directory

This scratchbox-based environment is intended for building emdebian [1] packages. It uses a scheme based on the emdebian STAG framework ideas [2]. It can also be used for making root filesystem images out of emdebian packages. This is an attempt to share the Nokia experience of Nokia 770 development and building bootable root filesystem images using the emdebian packaging scheme.

This is the project page of an attempt to create a Finnish language text-to-speech system for the Maemo platform and Nokia 770 Internet Tablet. As a side effect, also English language version of Flite is ported to these systems. Currently I have successfully compiled and run Flite on Maemo SDK both under PC and ARM target. I am pretty sure that almost all users, if not all, would like to have Instant Messenger client on the 770 that works for all the available IM platforms out there. Devesh Kothari offers exactly what we need, he has completed porting GAIM version 1.5 for the Maemo platform, which the 770 is running on.

I recently purchased a Nokia 770 wireless Internet Tablet (http://europe.nokia.com/nokia/0,,75023,00.html) and a few days ago I successfully ported Ruby 1.8.4 to it. For those of you who are unfamiliar w/the 770, it's Nokia's first such non-phone product (or so they claim): a very nifty hand-held "PC" that among other things runs a pared down version of Linux (from kernel.org, debian package), has built in wifi and bluetooth, includes email client, Opera browser, RSS client, audio and video, all displayed on an 800x480x16bpp display. The 770 will sense any available wifi connection and jack in effortlessly. And, if you have a bluetooth-ready cell phone, the 770 can jack into that too and provide an internet connection via GPRS anywhere your cell has a signal (very cool indeed.) Before porting Ruby to it, it was love at first sight. Now I'm ecstatic.

But I have just gotten increasingly tired of dealing with development environments, preprocessing, linking, and portability. I spend half of my development time staring a link lines for missing function references from unknown or incompatible libraries.
