Nokia and Google are partnering up to create the new Nokia 770 Internet Tablet. The phone will allow users to surf the internet or send messages while they talk upon the Nokia phone through Google Talk. This means that people who own the Nokia 770 will be able to talk amongst themselves for free, but not call normal phone numbers.

The collaboration between the two companies has already yielded an active open source community around the framework itself.

SIPphone, the company behind Gizmo Project has released a new version of its client that works with Nokia 770 Internet tablet, giving users ability to IM and make phone calls using high speed Internet connections.

Nokia has just announced that the upcoming N770 Internet Tablet OS release will include Google Talk. The WiFi device enables Google Talk messaging and VoIP calls between N770 tablets and PCs (or of course with other N770s). You just connect to a WiFi network, then chat or place free calls using Google Talk as you normally would. Except now you can do so from cafes, airports, schools, offices - from any WiFi hotspot or network - without your PC.

Nokia 770 tablet gains commercial VoIP softphone The Gizmo Project has ported its VoIP (voice-over-IP) softphone to Nokia's 770 Internet Tablet. Gizmo's free features include calls with other SIP-phone users, voicemail, and conference calls. Paid features include "call outs" to non-SIP-based phones, and a 10-digit U.S. phone number, to support incoming calls.

I own a Nokia 770 internet tablet, which is an 8-ounce device running a full Debian Linux distro (called Internet Tablet 2005) with built-in WiFi. It has an ARM processor. It's basically specialized for portable internet communication (despite the big screen it's about the size of a PDA). There's no VoIP yet, though. VoIP is promised in 2006, but no specifics yet and the date is slipping. Maybe July?

For those who like to use VoIP anywhere, like me, but have to log on at a hotspot, like a T-Mobile one at Starbucks which requires a user name and password, making calls just got easier via the combination of the new and very cool 2006 operating system on the Nokia 770 Tablet and GizmoProject.
